Porcupine Puffer Fish

Here’s my new friend – the Porcupine Puffer fish.

When I saw him, his face looked interesting; it reminded me of the moustache joe from another fish trip.   Plus look at those blue eyes!

Then I saw the quills on his body, and was then totally fascinated with him.

I read the fish names on the tank, and of course it was the porcupine puffer fish.  And so I tracked him swimming back and forth, and put my finger up to the glass, asking it to puff up for me.  A worker saw me, and asked if I wanted to make it puff up for pictures.  She said that the only time he’ll puff up is if he feels threatened, and if you hold him.  And she volunteered to put her hand in to hold him, so that he’ll puff up.

What??  Well, apparently, they’re not poisonous, and the quills don’t sting.  It’s all appearances … puff up the quills to discourage would-be predators who want to eat them.  And so, she put her hand in the tank, and chased him around …. Poof!!  This is what he looked like then.

Yes, he is scary looking.  And those quills does discourage eating him, doesn’t it?

We left him alone then, and he swam around and calmed down.  This is what he looked like calmed down … well, almost.  He’s still got the quills and spikes up on his head.

And he wouldn’t come to the front of the tank again.  He probably thought I was going to try something else to him again ….

Another Trip to the Fish Store

Well, we’re on a fish trip these days.  Now the filter in the aquarium wasn’t working, so hubby had to go back to the fish store and have them take a look and fix the filter.

This time, I was prepared.  Armed with the big camera, I jumped in the car with him, thinking already of my friend, the Volitan Lion Fish, and excited to get better pictures of him.

And yes, these pictures were so much better.  This is actually the smaller lionfish.  The other two big ones were just lazing around, and wouldn’t pose for me.

And I still wanted to take him home with me.

Some Colour Back in the Tank

Here’s the tank, all cleaned up and with the new fish and accessories.

These fish are living the life, aren’t they?   Wish somebody would come clean up my house and furnish it with new home decor!  lol  And they just swim around all day and get fed!

The tri-colour shark are the only original fish left from several years ago. The grandpa angelfish that we had died last week.

There’s goldfish in the tank again, after an absence of some years.  We got goldfish several times before, but they didn’t last long.  Hopefully these ones will last long enough and get big.

A Tank is not a Tank Without Angel Fish

The two new angelfish hubby got last week and the grandpa angelfish that we’ve had for several years all died last week.  Something unbalanced the aquarium, we don’t know what, maybe the ph-balance of the water, maybe too many new fish.

In any case, this afternoon hubby said he was going to the fish store.  He came back with four new angel fish, three red fish, and plants for the aquarium.  As he was working on the fish and the tank, he said that he just had to get some angel fish.  For him, a tank is not a real tank unless it has angel fish in it.

And so now, we have four angel fish swimming around.  Hopefully they’ll last long.

All the Other Fish

Here’s all the other fish that I had time to see.
Some of them wouldn’t sit still long enough for me to take their picture. They were too busy swimming around.

Imagine that!

I think I disturbed them sitting on their couch, watching all these humans pass by.

Volitan Lionfish

After I had finished looking at the corals, I went walking among the rows of fish tanks and aquariums, and came upon this … the Volitan Lionfish.

I think he didn’t like me taking his pictures, as he started swimming towards me, with all his fins out.

This was easily my favourite fish that day.  There were others with their bright colours, or their size that I found interesting.  But this one I wanted to take home with me.

But he was a saltwater fish, so we couldn’t.  Besides, he might eat up the angel and goldfish that we have in the aquarium, if he doesn’t sting them first with his venomous spines.

Maybe I can convince hubby to set up a small saltwater tank ….

Apologies again for the quality of the photos.  They hadn’t gotten around to cleaning his tank, so the water streaks or scratches hadn’t been cleaned yet.  Next time, we’ll go visit in the afternoon.
