Veined Petals

My current colour obsession

I know that the Pantone colour of the year is emerald, but my eyes are drawn more to this combination more than other colours.

The roses are about a week old, but I think that helped highlight the veins and threads through the petals.

I need to take up dyeing and painting again … so I can recreate something like this …

Textures and Lines

My eyes are always drawn to lines, patterns and textures everywhere, and photographing flowers was no exception.

The orchids specially have so many patterns and textures.

They’re like fingerprints … no two seem to be exactly alike.

DS2_2508

Maybe similar … but not the same.

There were even some that reminded me of those Rorschach blots and tests.  Do they still use those tests?

Or one of those art projects where you splatter blobs of paint on the paper; then fold the paper in half to make mirror images.

Hmmm … this kind of looks like a face …

DS2_2467

Some look like they were painted on the petals …

… and some look like sun rays ..

Designs within designs …

So much beauty in nature, isn’t there?

Perennial Beauties

Perennial beauties at the Garden. I’m actually getting familiar with them, and expect to see them.

DS2_1730

And because it is the same orchids each year, I try to do a different theme each visit.  This year, I decided to just use the NIkon 105mm and take macro shots of the orchids and plants.  A different challenge, as it does make you think about the composition of a shot.

DS2_2176

It’s not wide enough to take a shot of a whole piece unless you step back a distance.

DS2_2484

Sometimes I’m too close that I still have to step back because I wasn’t liking the macro shot.  Or maybe I just didn’t have my settings right …

Either way, it was a good learning exercise in photography.  Hope you enjoy the series.

A Ride Through the Gardens

Our annual visit to the NYBG for the Orchid Show, which finished here about a week ago.

DS2_1602

‘But, Mom!  It’s the same orchids every year!’, said Justin.

Well, true, but they have different arrangements and exhibits, I told him.  He didn’t mind going, and he only reminded me of the time about six times during our visit.

Since we were there early, we decided we would take a tram tour around the garden.

The magnolia trees were heavy with the flowers, the branches sagging down to the ground.  And I saw this darker shade of pink or fucshia? magnolias that I hadn’t seen before.  Too bad I couldn’t get closer.

A baby owl.  If it’s that big already, wonder what the full-grown size is going to be?

It was a nice day, and a nice ride.

I’m already making plans to go back in June, when the roses are out :)

Pushing Through

Small pink flowers, peeking through the fence.

Nothing stops them from blooming, even up against a fence.  Just push through and poke through the spaces.

20130430-090446.jpg

Which got me to thinking why we should give up just because there’s an obstacle in our path.  Maybe if we push just a little more, we’ll be one step closer to the goal …  Or maybe we can find a space somewhere that we can push through to the goal …

Hmmm … .going back to square one to rethink this problem .. maybe there’s a hole somewhere I can squeeze through …
