A little dark, but this is my ‘draft’ drawing, if you can call it that.
I can’t believe I’m working on a draft before working on the ‘final’. I told myself last year that I had to branch out and be a little more spontaneous and free-form, instead of planning out a drawing. And for the most part that’s what I was doing, mistakes and all.
I used to sketch or draw in pencil first, then ink it over. At some point, I decided that it was taking too much time, so I should just learn to draw in ink and go with the flow. It’s not as if I’m working on a commissioned work that will need to be perfect.
But still … there’s those times such as this that I don’t want to spoil the final piece. So … sketch and experiment away, I say, before working on the final piece.
What do you do? Sketch in pencil first, or just put pen to paper and go with it?
I use Indian ink pens and draw straight onto whatever medium I am drawing on. Any mistakes become part of the artwork. Sometimes it the little flaws that make it unique.
ooohh I had lots of mistakes with Indian ink during my art classes! and yes, the mistakes became part of the artwork, which is still the same with my current pieces. I remember an ink blotch that became an afro!
